Here's a little bit of History from the original charter
The London Horsemanship Club
officially came into being on “this fourth day of July in the year of Our Lord
one thousand nine hundred and sixty-three” by the seal of John Yaremko, the
Provincial Secretary and Minister of Citizenship. The founding members of the
club were Herbert Abrams, Albert Jessop, Harold Jones, Jean Mayo, Doryth Loewy,
Margaret Gaiser, Leslie Thompson, Robert Paton, and Donald Bristol. The
objectives of the club in 1963 were to establish, maintain and conduct a club,
to encourage the breeding and showing of horses, to encourage matches and
competitions, to bring to the attention of the public the good qualities and
merits of various breeds, and to further the interests of the community
generally.
The first annual general meeting was held on November 26th , 1963 at the YMCA
with 15 members present. It was reported that five riders turned out for the
Santa Claus parade dressed as old-fashioned children riding to school and Mr.
Corky Panarisi was recommended to be a guest speaker at the banquet to be held
on February 1st , 1964.
From the February 1964 minutes, there was a question of compulsory attendance at
meetings and it was suggested that attendance at 4 meetings per year be required
in order to show. At the March meeting in 1964, the committee reserved the right
to hire jump crews if these are deemed necessary to relieve the strain on
volunteers.
The annual membership fee in 1963 was $5.00. The annual insurance premium was
$50.00. The first shows in 1964 were held on June 21st , July 19th , and August
16th . In 2010, through generous sponsorships, active fundraising and volunteer
efforts, the membership fee is only $10.00.
There were 74 members in 1964. In 2007, there were over 100 members.
Both English and Western classes were held. The High Points English Trophy was
awarded to Judy Bowlby and the High Points Western Trophy went to Bruce Hicks.
In 1964, fundraising was done to buy new equipment, paint, poles, etc.
The judges for the English classes in 1965 were Cuthbert Ironside, Mr. and Mrs.
Barry Collard, and Jack Wilkinson. Judges were paid $10, however, it was noted
they often waived their fee for the LHC. The shows in 1965 were held at Shamrock
Stables.
In 1965, educational workshops were held showing how to shoe and clip a horse.
As well, there were demonstrations of how to show a horse in hand and what to
look for in a hunter type horse.
From the September general meeting in 1966, it was suggested that more help be
available from members to help in moving the jumps at the beginning and end of
the show season and for setting up the ring the days or day prior to the show.
In 2010, we are still working on this suggestion.
In 1969, it was recorded that the Ilderton Fair Board would consider putting up
a permanent show ring on their grounds if they were sure it would be used and
maybe the London Horsemanship could use it for their three shows. In 2010, we
still have all four LHC shows at the Ilderton Fairgrounds.
